West Bengal Transport Minister Madan Mitra, arrested by CBI in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam, was discharged from state-run SSKM Hospital this morning.
Mitra, who was released in the morning hours after his medical reports found him to be healthy, had been admitted to the hospital on December 19 after he complained of chest pain and respiratory distress at the Alipore Central Jail, a top hospital official said.
He was taken back to the jail. The hospital authorities had decided to discharge Mitra yesterday after "Nothing significant was found in the medical tests on him." "The medical board felt that there is no need to keep him in the hospital any more. Once the formalities are completed, the jail authorities will take him back," SSKM director Pradip Mitra told reporters yesterday. The minister's health would be reviewed after seven days, he had said.
Mitra was arrested on December 12 by CBI and remanded to judicial custody till January 2.
