The Madras High Court dismissed a petition filed by a group of bars and clubs seeking removal of a government order imposing VAT on liquor sold in bars and clubs in the state.
Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice MM Sundresh while dismissing the petitions, upheld the government order, said an advocate representing the petitioner.
Over 40 bars and clubs have approached the court stating they should be considered as end consumers purchasing liquor from the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (Tasmac) outlets across the state, and should be exempted from VAT.

Earlier, Tamil Nadu government, in its Budget for 2012-13, had stated alcoholic liquor being served in bars and restaurants in the state would be charged 14.5 per cent tax. The measure was expected to accrue additional Rs 150 crore revenue to the government.
