Legendary singer Manna Dey, 94, passed away today morning in Bangalore after suffering from lung infection.
The singer was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday after his health deteriorated. He had been in and out of hospital for the past few months.
Dey, known as the master of melody, started his playback career during 1943 in the film Tamanna. He sang over 3,000 songs in Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada and Assamese films.
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the country's highest honour in cinema, was awarded to the veteran singer in 2007. The Indian government also honoured him with the Padma Shri in 1971 and the Padma Bhushan in 2005. He is survived by his two daughters.
