Undeterred by arrests and the ongoing police investigations into spot fixing, bookies had a busy day on the final IPL match between Mumbai Indians (MI) & Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Sources in the know estimate that betting worth Rs 2,500 crore took place on Sunday although some of the leading bookies did not participate fearing police action. With the conclusion of 45 days of IPL 6 season for a moment betting fever is over and it is expected to begin from June 6 when India will meet Australia.
Betting was a low key affair especially in Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Jaipur. They kept lines opened. After the match began at the crowded Eden Gardens stadium the bet offered on MI was 75 paise meaning MI was favourite but after the first wicket fell bet offered on CSK was 85 paise whereby CSK became favourite. After MI lost its second wicket, bet offered was 60 paise and after third wickets 40 paise.
During recess CSK was 75 paise but when CSK came for batting and lost three wickets in the initial first overs that time Mumbai was 36 paise. Curiously, CSK captain MS Dhoni could not attract attention of the punters and thereafter CSK could not recover from the blow and failed to sustained pressure.
A person associated with betting said, “Hum log dhadha karenge to sub ka pet bharega.” (If we do betting others will earn their livelihood). Most importantly, punters are our mai bap. Sunday’s match was an opportunity given to punters to recover.”
Meanwhile, police across the country are stepping up their efforts to take action against bookies. So far police in West Bengal, Mumbai and couple of other centres have arrested more than 20 bookies after the spot fixing scandal came to light.
Meanwhile, the Mumbai police is said to have recovered Gurunath Meiyappan's mobile phone from his yacht.
The police is still looking for three more phones of Meiyappan, a suspect in the IPL betting case. Police sources said Meiyappan used these phones to stay in touch with bookies.
Police sources also said that other items found during the raid also linked Meiyappan with the IPL team.
