At the time, he was on tour in Shanghai, addressing the Indian Community there. His remarks sparked a bitter backlash with #ModiInsultsIndia becoming the top trend on Twitter.
The Hindu reports Modi as saying: “Earlier, you felt ashamed of being born Indian,” he said. “Now you feel proud to represent the country. Indians abroad had all hoped for a change in government last year.”
