Narendra Modi was unanimously elected as the leader of the Gujarat BJP's legislative party, at a meeting of the party MLAs in Gandhinagar on Tuesday. Modi will be sworn in as the chief minister of the state on Wednesday.
At a meeting of the newly elected MLAs of the BJP held in Gandhinagar, senior party leader Vaju Vala proposed Modi's name as leader of the legislative party, which was accepted by all the members unanimously. BJP had won 115 seats out of the 182 seats in the state. Congress had won 61, while others got the remaining 6 seats.
Speaking on the occasion Modi thanked all the party workers and the MLAs for selecting him as their leader in the new assembly. He further asked the MLAs to work as a team and decide as a team for the progress and future of Gujarat.
Modi also encouraged his party workers by saying, "we have broken old records and will now create new ones."
"Our objective should be for the welfare of the people and the future generation," Modi told the his team of MLAs.
He further mocked Congress for its work culture and said that in Gujarat BJP it is the team spirit that prevails which has become an example for party workers across the country.
Modi further said that Congress during is rule after independence has failed to utilise the opportunity which the people of the state had provided them.
Also present on the occasion was senior BJP leader and observer for the even, Arun Jaitley. He hailed Gujarat BJP as unique as it has won five consecutive assembly elections in the state.
"It is the good fortune of the party that we have such as an able leadership in Gujarat. It has baffled the opposition here," the Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat said. He said that more the opposition and struggle for Modi, the better he has emerged.
Jaitley was of the opinion that the trust that the BJP has gained from the people of Gujarat cannot be broken by any amount of false propaganda by the opposition. "Defamation of Gujarat, our leadership, fell short of the trust that the people have in our party, and hence were able to defeat the false propaganda by certain sections of the society," he added.
