Both India and China had been victims of terrorism, which was a scourge afflicting the entire region, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Chinese President Xi Jinping at a bilateral meeting between the delegations of their two countries on Saturday, a day before the start of the 8th BRICS summit. The talks were held at the Taj Exotica resort in Goa.
Vikas Swarup, a spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), informed after the meeting: “Both (PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping) reviewed bilateral relationship and its dimensions and both sides recognised terrorism as a key issue.”

"The PM further said today no country is immune to terrorism, and this is an issue of which we cannot afford to have any differences,” he said, adding, “The Chinese president said that terrorism and violent extremism were on the increase and he alluded to the threat from ISIL.”

Soon after the talks, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: “My meeting with President #XiJinping was fruitful. We discussed various aspects of India-China ties.”

In another tweet, he also mentioned his meeting with South African President Jacob Zuma.

He tweeted, "Met @SAPresident & had comprehensive talks with him on further cementing India's ties with South Africa."

On the bilateral talks between India and China, Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar said both leaders strongly condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

Swarup said President Xi Jinping wanted to strengthen security dialogue and partnership between India and China.

Commenting on Masood Azhar, the MEA spokesperson said there was a close coordination between India and China on this issue and that particular dialogue would continue. “The Chinese side is very well aware of our concerns and the need for us to ensure that globally notified terrorists are designated by the UN,” MEA said.

Swarup also mentioned that the PM sought an increase in coordination between India and China in the context of the UN 1267 committee and both countries should look for a common ground.

The MEA spokesperson also informed that there was a brief discussion on the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG): “The PM said India looked forward to working with China to realise its membership of the NSG.”

“One round of consultations had already taken place between the two sides. President Xi said that the second round would be happening soon,” he noted.

Our broad concerns in the current state were conveyed to the Chinese side and the intention was that both sides should narrow down areas of differences, he said.

He said, “President Xi lauded India’s chairmanship of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa), and in particular the outreach with BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) countries which he described as innovative.”

He also informed that PM Modi would have meetings with Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay on Sunday.

Earlier, ahead of the BRICS summit, Chinese official media called on member countries to agree on Beijing's proposal to make the bloc a free trade area and initiate measures to liberalise trade. By setting up a free trade area, BRICS countries would be able to remove tariff and non-tariff barriers, advance trade and liberalise investments among member nations, China's spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce (MOC), Shen Danyang, had told a press briefing.
