The South-West monsoon rains had drenched a major part of Chhattisgarh even as the state capital had been observing the first showers of the season for the last 24 hours.

With the delay of over 10 days, monsoon entered the Chhattisgarh capital last night. The SW-monsoon has further advance into most part of the state. The meteorological department officials said that the monsoon had been vigorous and would further advance towards northern parts.

The record collected by the Chhattisgarh Meteorological Centre said that Raipur received 112 millimeters (mm) of rains in last 24 hours while Bastar received 236 mm. Over 100 villages in Bastar, from where the South-West monsoon entered the state on June 13, had been cut off due to unabated rains. The local authorities are closing monitoring the situation.

The Director of Meteorological Centre, M L Sahu said the monsoon arrival in the state was not much delayed. Normally, the state capital received the first shower of monsoon by June 10. Despite the delay, the average rainfall in the state calculated for the period had been above normal, Sahu added.

The normal life in the state capital was however affected due to continuous rains on Monday. Many low lying areas had been inundated; exposing the preparedness of the civic body and urban administration to deal with the monsoon. Even a few posh colonies had been flooded in Raipur.

The mercury level in the state capital had also come down drastically.
