Though the arrival of monsoon in Gujarat is delayed compared to last year, it is expected to set over the state by the end of the week, said officials of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Ahmedabad on Monday. The monsoon reached Gujarat on Sunday resulting in heavy to moderate rainfall in some parts of south Gujarat and Saurashtra region.
“Off shore trough on sea level chart extending from Gujarat coast to Kerala coast persists, as a result there is likely to be light to moderate rain or thundershowers at a few places in the districts of Gujarat while moderate to rather heavy rain or thundershowers would occur at a few places in the districts of Saurashtra and Kutch region and in Diu in the next few days,” stated a forecast issued by the IMD, Ahmedabad.
“Though the monsoon reached Gujarat on June 9 in 2013, this year it has been delayed and is expected to cover the state of Gujarat by the end of the week (June 21),” said IMD, director in Ahmedabad, Jayant Sarkar.
Meanwhile, districts of Junagadh and Gir-Somnath in Saurahstra region received heavy rainfall yesterday with the highest rainfall being 380 mm in Kodinar block. Other talukas in Saurashtra region that received good rainfall include Mendarda (279 mm), Junagadh city (204 mm), Talala (191 mm), Vanthali (171 mm), Una (161 mm), Manavadar (134 mm) and Malia (123 mm).
While in south Gujarat talukas of Surat, Valsad and Navsari received significant rainfall. In all, 67 talukas across 15 districts received rainfall in last 24 hours with state average being 12 mm.

With regards to effect of cyclone ‘Nanauk’ on the progress of monsoon, Sarkar said that it had no significant affect. “We are constantly monitoring the progress the monsoon and we expect some good rain in couple of days,” he added.
