Mountaineering to be promoted in Arunachal Pradesh: Pema Khandu

Khandu also asked the department of sports and youth affairs to tie up with IMF to designate peaks like Gorichen to make them accessible to the mountaineers

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has said mountaineering would be promoted to tap the enormous potential of adventure tourism in the state and has instructed immediate process for finalisation of the state mountaineering policy.

Khandu also asked the department of sports and youth affairs to tie up with Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) in New Delhi to designate peaks like Gorichen and others in the state to make them accessible to the mountaineers, an official communique informed here on Saturday.

On Friday, Khandu was speaking during the flag-in ceremony of six-member Arunachalee mountaineering team which scaled the 20,182 ft Mount Stok Kangri on July 24.

Stok Kangri is the highest mountain in the Stok range of Himalayas in Ladakh and the expedition is the first major indigenous mountaineering expedition launched and sponsored by the state in the Himalayas.

Congratulating the expedition team, Khandu assured full support and sponsorship to the aspiring mountaineers of the state.

The team was led by in-charge, adventure cell of the state youth affairs department K Romeo Meetei.
