While the sealed electronic voting machines (EVMs) wait to be unlocked to reveal their secrets at the two centres in Mysore on May 8, a look at the final polling figures reveal that all 10 Assembly constituencies have registered a higher voting percentage than the 2008 elections in Karnataka.
The sealed EVMs have been kept under tight vigil at the JSS Arts, Commerce and Science College on Ooty Road, on the outskirts of the city, and at Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (JCE) adjacent to the Manasa Gangotri campus where counting will be conducted on Wednesday.
The 10 constituencies together have shown a voter turnout of 71.15 per cent, while elections for the 11 constituencies last time had seen a turnout of 67.16 per cent. Elections were not conducted in Periyapatna yesterday as it has been scheduled for a later date. If elections had taken place in Periyapatna too, the percentage of voting in the district would have seen a further rise. In the last elections, this Assembly segment had seen 79.19 per cent turnout which perhaps would have been higher this time on par with the other 10 segments.
As can be seen from the above figures, the percentage of polling in K R Nagar is the highest followed by the prestigious Varuna constituency where Opposition leader Siddaramaiah, who is aspiring to become the chief minister, is better placed.
While the Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) had made some impact on voters and increased voter turnout by about 4 per cent in the district, voters in the three Assembly segments in Mysore city had continued with their apathy. Though the performance had improved over the previous election, the three constituencies had as usual failed to reach even 60 per cent.
The lowest was in Narasimharaja, predominantly a Muslim-populated area.
Counting of votes of K R Nagar, Husnur, Krishnaraja, Chamaraja, and Narasimharaja will be held at the SJCE, while those of Varuna, Chamundeswari, H D Kote, Nanjangud, and T Narasipur will take place at the JSS College, where tightened vigil is in force.
Prohibitory order will be in force from 6 am to 12 midnight on the counting day to maintain peace and order in the city, Police Commissioner K L Sudheer announced on Monday. Victory processions, bursting of crackers, assembly of over five persons around 200 metre area of the counting places, making provocative speeches, entry of unauthorised persons into the polling centres have been banned in the city.
