The Mysore Division of South Western Railway will start works worth around Rs 70 crore soon.
As many as 78 important passenger amenity works have been sanctioned in the current year that will help in better travel experience for the customers. The projects include extension of platforms, platform shelters, approach road, toilets, display system, public announcement system, road under-bridges and water purification plants.
Divisional Railway Manager Raj Kumar Lal told a press meet on Wednesday that the Mysuru City Railway Station would be developed at Rs 2 crore. The Ministry of Railways (Railway Board) had asked the division to propose works, particularly relating to passenger amenities, at the railway station in the current year itself. A detailed estimate of the works would be forwarded soon.
According to the directive of the Ministry of Railways, he said the division observed ‘customer facilitation fortnight’ from May 26 to June 9 to achieve the principal objective of connecting with ordinary customers for effective delivery of various services. All the important stations were covered in the inspections during the fortnight.
Lal said he interacted with scores of people to get a sense of their expectations from the railways with regard to various services like catering, punctuality, safety and other amenities. Provision of electric points for mobile battery charging, adequate water in compartments of long-distance trains, eradicating the menace of hawkers and vendors and complete ban on smoking in trains were some of the common demands made, he added.
In the course of the drive 14 important stations received focussed attention with regard to passenger amenities with officers inspecting 45 train services. About 19 health camps were held for the railway employees and a yoga and ayurveda camp for over 300 employees. A total of 114 employees were provided training for skill development.
Seven intensive ticket checking drives were launched across the division and 3,608 offenders were prosecuted or penalised for various irregularities. For ensuring punctuality of trains, a total of 25 drives were conducted. In addition, 19 checks were conducted for improving quality of catering services, especially hygiene.
About 100 inspections, including awareness campaigns, at unmanned level-crossing gates were conducted. Railways had also identified nine stations with MoU signed with railway public sector undertakings for upgrading facilities under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). These include battery-operated cars for transportation of differently-abled/elderly and sick passengers and coin-operated water vending machines.
