With mercury rising, the district administration is initiating steps to face drinking water scarcity.
Although Mysuru is blessed with the Cauvery and the Kabini, which meet the drinking water supplies to the city, the depleting water level at the Krishnarajasagar reservoir, the chief source of drinking water, throws up concerns during summer, both for the administration and the stake-holders. Short-term measures become necessary to mitigate the hardship in rural areas too.
Earlier this month, Mysuru Deputy Commissioner C Shikha had asked officials at the taluk level to take precautionary measures to see that rural areas do not face drinking water hardship during the summer.
At a meeting convened to discuss drinking water problem in the district on March 27, Zilla Panchayat Chairman Pushpa Amarnath said Rs 45 lakh was provided to each Assembly constituency and a task force was functioning under the chairmanship of the local legislator to tackle the problem.
She had asked the ZP members to immediately report to the local tahsildar and the executive officers any problem that may arise while calling for precaution against drinking water shortage during the summer.
“Being the local representatives, the ZP members will have additional information on drinking water woes in their areas and they will be knowing the issues being faced by the people. They should list the drinking water problems and submit it for solving them.”
Members said power supply affected more, particularly during summer. It would be better if hand pumps were provided for borewells. Panchayat development officers should take up minor repairs immediately as funds were available with gram panchayats.
Though some works had been completed, lack of power connection had affected drinking water supply, they complained.
Responding to the issues raised by the members, officials of the Chamundeswari Electricity Supply Company said the ZP needs to deposit Rs 47 lakh for providing power connection for a dozen works. If there was a shortage of funds, it should give an agreement towards the same and the works would be taken up.
The issue of water shortage and conservation also figured in the ‘Hamar Jal-Hamara Jeevan’ workshop organised by the district administration as part of the nation-wide campaign.
Water was being supplied in tankers to some villages in Jayapura hobli of Mysuru taluk for the last 25 years, the DC said, adding the below surface water level had fallen steeply in this area. Hence, Gopalapura village had been chosen for steps to raise the ground water level.
Shikha also suggested encouragement to take up construction of bunds, water conservation pits in agricultural plots and check-dams at lesser cost for better results to rise water levels. Though the district was free from floride in drinking water, nitrate problem in some places needed serious attention.
