Parents of Nido Taniam, who died after being beaten up by shopkeepers here, met Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi Tuesday and demanded steps be taken to curb discrimination against the people from northeastern states.

"We met Rahul Gandhi and have made it clear that if initiatives are not taken by the government to curb discrimination against the northeast people, then things are not going to change," Taniam's mother told the media.

"I appeal to all businessmen that they should come forward to help the government in putting up hoardings and posters in public places against discrimination," she added.

Nido Taniam, 19, was assaulted mercilessly by shopkeepers Jan 29 in south Delhi's Lajpat Nagar market following a row over his appearance. He died in a hospital the next day.
