The regulatory framework of the University Grants Commission (UGC) will undergo revamp to enhance the quality of higher education in India, the government said on Thursday.
The NITI Aayog has been assigned to recommend measures for improvement in the regulatory framework of the UGC, MoS for HRD Mahendra Nath Pandey informed the Rajya Sabha.
"The objectives of this task are to examine and improve the existing higher education regulatory framework in line with contemporary national and global requirements and to enhance the quality of higher education in India," Pandey said in a written reply to the house.
The minister said NITI Aayog along with the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development and the UGC were assigned the task of finalising a regulatory framework for setting up of 20 world-class institutions.
The guidelines will suggest the roadmap for implementation of the regulatory framework. The identification/selection of the institutes for world class institutions will be made only after the guidelines and regulations are finalised and notified," he said.
"The draft regulations and guidelines for the same have been placed in the public domain for comments," Pandey added.
