T S Papola, a noted  development economist, died  here on Monday. He was  74.

He was an advisor with the erstwhile Planning Commission from 1987 to 1995. He was a founder-member and former director at the Institute for Studies in Industrial Development in Delhi; chairman of the Giri Institute of Development Studies, Lucknow, and  founder-member of the Institute for Human Development, Delhi. He was also chairman of the fourth state finance commission of Uttarakhand.

Papola had over four decades of experience in teaching, research and advisory assignments. He specialised in labour and  employment, development planning, industrial economics, regional development, and enterprise development. He had taught at the universities of Lucknow and Bombay, Indian Institute of Management (Ahmedabad), and University of Cambridge, UK.

He had also authored 14 books and at least 80 research papers in reputed journals.
