The annual number of cases reported has fallen from 7.3 million in 2019 to about two million as of November 2022.
According to World Health Organization estimates, India accounts for 36 per cent of global deaths by rabies, at 18,000-20,000 a year. About 30-60 per cent of dog bite cases and deaths occur in children aged under 15.
