Over Rs 8 lakh in new notes seized in Bengal

Over Rs 8 lakh in new currency notes was seized in West Bengal's Midnapore district as it was being transported illegally and two people arrested, police said on Friday.

"New notes worth Rs. 8,51,700 was seized from a car while conducting a police petrol near Debra in West Midnapore on Thursday night. Of the seized amount, Rs 7.44 lakh was in the new Rs 2,000 denomination and the rest in Rs 100 notes," said Hirak Biswas, Officer in-charge of Debra police station.

"Two persons in the car were arrested as they could not explain the source of the money," he said.

Police said both the accused are the residents of the district.

The seizure happened amid the increased police vigil in the state highways after repeated cases of illegal money transport.

"The two arrested were produced before the local court on Friday where they were remanded in three days police custody," said Biswas.
