Overhead bridge engulfed in flames: Mumbai's Bandra station fire in pictures

A massive fire broke out at Behrampada slums area adjacent to suburban Bandra Railway Station(East) in Mumbai on Thursday afternoon. The incident took place during a demolition drive by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)in Garib Nagar area.  

The blaze was first spotted in the afternoon and soon it started spreading, engulfing more than 100 shanties in the vicinity.

The overhead pedestrian bridge connecting Bandra East and Bandra station, one of Mumbai's busiest, was severely engulfed in flames, NDTV reported. The skywalk connecting Bandra East and Bandra station has been severely affected.

After the incident, the Central Railway suspended train services to Bandra-Andheri on Harbour line for almost 20 minutes which created panic among the daily commuters.

"Our control room got a call at 4.24 pm and fire brigade personnel along with 16 fire engines and 10 water tankers have been pressed into service," the official said to PTI. The fire was brought under control at 7.20pm, according to Hindustan Times.

No casualties have been reported so far, a fire brigade official told PTI. One firefighter and four local residents were injured in the incident, according to NDTV. Both were taken to a hospital and are now out of danger.

The hawkers and slum-dwellers bore most of the brunt, losing their belongings to the fire.

No casualty to railway staffers or passengers was reported," a statement from the Western Railway said.
