The central government on Thursday will present its last full Budget of this term. Will the government keep to its fiscal deficit target? Will its revenue collections meet expectations? Will it report sufficient disinvestment? Will tax slabs at the lower end of the spectrum be rejigged? All these questions will answered on the Budget Day.
'Achievements' rally
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Bengaluru to address a rally next Sunday. His visit to mark the conclusion of the Bharatiya Janata Party's Parivarthana Yatra was earlier scheduled for January 28, but the party's central unit asked the state unit to put off the event, citing Budget preparations. "He (PM) may be in a better position to refer to his achievements if he addresses the rally after presentation of the Budget,”a party leader said. A federation of Kannada organisations has decided to hold a demonstration in Bengaluru during the visit, seeking intervention in the Mahadayi water sharing row with Goa.
A fraught session
The West Bengal Assembly will begin its Winter session on Tuesday. By-elections in Uluberia for a Lok Sabha seat and Noapara for an Assembly seat will be held on Monday and results will be out on Saturday. Expect a fraught session.
