President Pranab Mukherjee will launch Impacting Research Innovation and Technology (Imprint) India - a joint initiative of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) - on Thursday. Imprint India seeks to develop a road map for research to solve major engineering and technology challenges in 10 technology domains relevant for the country.
The move will motivate technical institutions to conduct research in areas where the country is heavily dependent on foreign technology. These include health care, information and communication technology, energy, sustainable habitat, nano-technology hardware, water resources and river systems, advanced materials, manufacturing, security & defence, and environment & climate. “The programme is expected to lay down a road map for India to achieve a leadership position in various sectors. Imprint would help channelise the various sectors to work towards a common goal of making the country grow in different development sectors,” said a senior official who will take part in the event.
The objectives of the initiative include identifying areas of relevance to society that require innovation, ensuring higher funding support for research into these areas, and measuring the research’s impact on people’s standard of living.
The idea of launching ‘Imprint India’ originated during the conference of chairmen, board of governors and directors of IITs, convened by the President at Rashtrapati Bhavan on August 22 last year. It is based on the Prime Minister’s suggestion that research done by institutions of national importance must be linked with immediate requirements of the society at large. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also attend the event and release the Imprint India brochure, handing over the first copy to the President. Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Zubin Irani will also address the gathering. The 10 coordinating institutions have done extensive consultations and arrived at specific themes in each area of research that has an immediate social relevance.
Imprint India is being launched during the visitor’s conference so that wide discussions could be held among the academic community, leading to further scientific collaboration among various institutions in these areas.
“The top research community from across central universities, IITs, National Institutes of Technology, IISc (Bengaluru), Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research, Indian Institutes of Information Technology, National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, National Institute of Fashion Technology, School of Planning and Architecture (New Delhi and Bhopal), and senior government officials, will attend the function,” added the official quoted above.
