Investigations and judicial proceedings on crimes against women have now become faster than before in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today said.

"The delays are there only when the cases are shifted from one court to another as in Kamduni case in which a college girl was raped and murdered," Banerjee said.

She said her government has already decided to set up 88 Fast Track Courts to expedite disposal of cases on crimes against women. Of them, 45 Fast Track Courts are already in operation, she said, adding, "We have started getting result of various steps taken for speedy disposal of such cases."

"Offenders must be punished for such crimes," she told reporters before leaving the state secretariat for inauguration of some Durgapuja Pandals. She was also scheduled to meet the inmates at 'Nabanir', an old-age home near Chetla in the metropolis, and distribute clothes among them during the festival.
