 "Punjab to launch job policy for players to promote sports")
The Punjab government will launch a job policy in the next Cabinet meeting for sportspersons of the state who bring laurels from international sports events. Under this policy, players who are recruited for government jobs would have to spend initial 10 years on deputation in sports department for developing sports talent.
While talking to the media on the sidelines of the launch of the fifth World Kabaddi Cup, Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukbir Singh Badal said about this plan. The state is hosting this event from December 6-20.
"In the next Cabinet meeting which is scheduled next week, we will take up the matter related to the new job policy and hope to announce shortly. We will also ensure promotions to these players, besides fixing incentives for coaches," he assured.
Highlighting these initiatives taken by the state government, the deputy chief minister informed Punjab is the first state in the country to create sports fund dedicated to develop sports infrastructure.
He added Punjab was spending Rs 80-Rs 90 crore per year for sports infrastructure and activities and contemplating to increase this budget to more than Rs 100 crore from next year.
He said the SAD-BJP government had set up 10 multipurpose stadiums and six hockey stadiums with astroturf. "We can proudly claim out of the three world-class astroturfs in India, two are in Punjab," he said.
Stressing the need to enhance Centre's budgetary support to sports, Badal said every fifth person in the world is Indian and we are still far behind while getting medals during international events. He said he would personally request the Prime Minister and Union sports minister for substantial increase in sports budget, so that Indian players could compete at the international level.

The state government had recently given cash awards to the tune of Rs 5.43 crore to the medallists of Asian and Commonwealth Games and 10 sportspersons were appointed as Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs). Badal also said that the state had already set up Punjab Institute of Sports at SAS Nagar with 11 different disciplines. He said this first-of-its-kind sports institute would work on the policy of 'catch them young' to provide world-class coaching, psychologists, diet, training and equipment free of cost to budding talents.
