Copious rainfall in the Kodagu catchment areas bringing water level at the Krishnarajasagar reservoir to the maximum level had resolved three concerns, including the inter-state Cauvery issue, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said.
Speaking to reporters after offering 'Bagina' to the Cauvery at the Krishnarajasagar reservoir, he said, copious rains in the state had brought relief in respect of drinking water and power issues as well, resolving all the three concerns simultaneously. "It is my fortune that soon after becoming the chief minister I am performing the Cauvery pooja," he said, expressing his happiness over the water level in the major Cauvery reservoir reaching the maximum of 124.80 feet for the first time after a lapse of a few years so also the other reservoirs in the state, including Harangi, Hemavathi, Kabini and Linganamakki.
If there was sufficient rains in the catchment areas, the Cauvery issue would not arise at all. So, water and power problems too would not arise, the chief minister remarked.
As heavy rains continued in Kodagu, water inflow into the KRS reservoir had risen to 37,960 cusecs and the outflow had been raised to 85,000 cusecs. As a result, authorities had cautioned people on the banks of the river to move to safer areas. The inflow may further rise as over 51,000 cusecs of water was being discharged from the Hemavathi reservoir which had also filled up.
It was for the first time that a chief minister was worshipping the Cauvery without his wife.
Against the general practice of the chief minister offering 'Bagina' accompanied by his wife, Siddaramaiah's wife, who prefers to stay in the background, was not present.
