Noted jurist Harish Salve on Wednesday supported Supreme Court's attempt to frame guidelines for media for covering court proceedings saying there was a need for maintaining balance between the rule of law and freedom of media. This has become necessary to protect the interest of institutional integrity, particularly with the advent of electronic media, which has taken a new dimension, he told a five-member constitution bench hearing issue of media guidelines. Salve, a senior lawyer, said reporting of important cases sometimes has a "chilling effect" on the conduct of court proceedings.
