New Power Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, while assuming charge on Monday, said he wanted to sort out “fuel issues” with the coal ministry. This, however, is set to be an uphill task. While the quantum of fresh power capacity languishing for want of coal is at an all-time high, the coal sector is itself going through a policy upheaval unprecedented in recent history. The coal ministry is struggling to convince Coal India Ltd on the changes sought by power companies in the new fuel supply agreements. To add to firms’ woes, the ministry has started a massive drive to cancel coal allotments.
