The South Central Railway (SCR) has realised an amount aggregating Rs 73.67 crore from ticketless and irregular travellers towards penalty during April-December 2014, an increase of 18.36 per cent than the penalty realised during the same period of the last financial year.
Cumulatively, during the period from April to December, 2014, 2.26 million cases were apprehended. These include over 700,000 cases of travel without tickets; 788,000 cases of irregular travel and 769,000 cases of un-booked luggage, SCR said in a press release on Thursday.
Irregular travel includes traveling on transferred ticket, adults traveling on child ticket, non-senior citizen travelling on senior citizen tickets, general and season ticket holders traveling in reserved coaches etc.
During December, 266,000 cases were detected, which was 17.22 per cent higher against the corresponding period of last year. These include 89,236 cases of travel without ticket, 79,426 cases of irregular travel and 97,749 cases of un-booked luggage. An amount of Rs 8.62 crore was realised from these ticketless travel, irregular travel and un-booked luggage cases towards penalty registering during December 2014, it said.

SCR said surprise checks carried out by the flying squads of the divisions and headquarters, and fortress checks conducted under direct supervision of senior officials at major stations helped reduce ticketless travel.
