Seventeen suspected activists of SIMI, banned Islamist student organisation, who were allegedly involved in terror activities, were acquitted by a court here today.

The acquitted included Students Islamic Movement of India former chief Safdar Nagori, alleged key conspirator behind terror attacks in Ahmedabad. Nagori, arrested from Indore in March 2008, is linked to several other terror cases and is in jail. The suspected SIMI activists were acquitted after the prosecution failed to prove charges against them earlier, Hubballi DCP (Law and Order) Hanumanthraya said. They were arrested from various parts of Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh in 2008, he said.

SIMI suspects were nabbed at Honnali in Davanagere district, Hubballi-Dharwad district and Indore in Madhya Pradesh for their alleged terror activities, Hanumanthraya said.
