Shashi Kant Sharma appointed CAG

Sharma who succeeds Vinod Rai will take over his charge from May 23, 2013

Shashi Kant Sharma, secretary in the Ministry of Defence and a 1976 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Bihar cadre, has been appointed the new Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India. He will succeed Vinod Rai, who is set to retire tomorrow.

Sharma would take the oath of office on Thursday.

A press statement issued by the CAG’s office said, “The President of India has appointed Shashi Kant Sharma, IAS, as Comptroller & Auditor General of India, in terms of Article 148 (1) of the Constitution of India.”

Sharma holds a master’s degree in political science from the University of York. As is the case with his predecessor Rai, Sharma has also served as secretary in the Department of Financial Services.

The CAG is appointed for a six years, or till the incumbent is 65, whichever is earlier.

Senior IAS officer Radha Krishna Mathur is likely to be appointed as defence secretary, according to a PTI report.
