The Shiradi Ghat stretch on the Mangalore-Bangalore National Highway 75 will be closed for all type of vehicles for six months from December 1, 2014 to May 30, 2015 to facilitate upgradation of the 47 km road at a cost of Rs 155.18 crore, an official statement said.
The work is aimed at enabling fast flow of traffic between the West Coast towns and the state capital. Mangalore National Highway Division Executive Engineer C Nataraj said the work would be carried out in two phases. The first phase would be the 13.62 km stretch between Heggadde to Kempu Holey.
The second phase of maintenance would be from Gulagalale to Heggadde (21 km) and from Kempu Holey to Adda Holey(12.38 km). A meeting held at the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district yesterday discussed alternative routes to be used during the period while the ghat road remains closed, the statement said.
The meeting, presided by the DC, was attended by officials of PWD, National Highways, KSRTC, police, Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (Mescom) and telecom departments. The DC also directed the officials to request Railways to introduce additional passenger and goods trains between Mangalore and Bangalore during the period.
