The prime accused in the five murders in Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh was arrested on Monday, police said.
Shiv Kumar Yadav's arrest came a day after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath put the police on notice regarding the murders.
The five persons were killed on Eid night in Unchahar town, leading to widespread criticism of the state government for failing to control crime.
Police said they apprehended Yadav from the Mill area. He was trying to escape when, acting on a tip, police closed in on him. Yadav is a former block head of Rohania.
Inspector Surkhab Khan led the police team in the operation, a Home Department official said.
