Karnataka has constituted the State Disaster Response Force to deal with any eventuality and avoid / minimise the damage. A high-level meeting was held in Kaiga on Monday to discuss preparedness in case of disasters at the nuclear power station.
Senior officials from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Nuclear Power Corporation, district administration and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) participated in the meeting.
Director General of Police (Home Guards and Fire Services) Omprakash said, the state government had issued a notification on June 4 for the formation of SDRF. Till now, a total of 12 NDRF companies are working under the NDMA in India and the proposal was to form an SDRF on the same lines.
A team of 35 persons from this company, specially trained to combat chemical and biological weapons, would be deputed to Kaiga. To help them, a team comprising of 35 persons from the local area would also be included, the DGP said.
Barring Bangalore, Kaiga, Shakthi Nagar and Karwar are the three places where civil defence personnel are stationed.
IGP Home Guards and Disaster Management Gopal Hosur informed that the remuneration of home guards was hiked from Rs 150 to Rs 250 per day. Discussion is on with the government to bring home guards under group insurance welfare funds. In every district, a home guards bhavan and a training area would be built.
He said that more fire stations would be set up in the district.

These companies would be stationed in Bangalore, Mangalore, Belgaum and Gulbarga, and five more companies would be created in two stages, he said. Each company would comprise of 127 persons which would include officers of different cadres. Divers and boatmen would also be included. These people would be taken on deputation from the KSRP, fire and emergency services, and home guards. Technical experts and doctors would also be part of this multi-skilled force.
