Lawyer Gopal Subramanium on Wednesday withdrew from being considered for Supreme Court judge, accusing the Modi government of "brazenly" ordering the Central Bureau of Investigation to "scrounge" for "dirt" against him to stop his elevation.

Subramanium, who had assisted the Supreme Court in the Sohrabuddin encounter case in which Amit Shah, an aide of Prime Minister Narender Modi is now an accused, said he was being "targeted" because of his independence and integrity.

Law and Justice Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the government had a role in the decision but he would not comment.

Subramanium said on May 15 the Intelligence Bureau had given him a "clean chit" but after that the law ministry had initiated an inquiry "with a clear mandate to find something to describe me as unsuitable".
