The Delhi Police on Tuesday registered a case of murder a year after the mysterious death of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s wife, Sunanda Pushkar. The basis was a medical report that concluded her death was unnatural and due to poisoning.
“Stunned” Tharoor, who married Sunanda in 2010, sought full details from the investigators on the basis of the police action came. The Congress Party sought an “impartial inquiry” and “appropriate action”.
Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi said the medical report findings had revealed her death was caused by poisoning. It was not clear whether she had consumed the poison by herself or it was administered forcefully or through injection, he added. He did not rule out questioning Tharoor. The police will send Sunanda’s viscera samples to a laboratory in either Britain or the US to identify the poison, including whether it could be a radioactive isotope that cannot be detected in Indian labs.
Responding to the developments, Tharoor issued a statement seeking “full information” from investigators and a “comprehensive investigation” into the case so that “unvarnished truth” comes out. Tharoor stated, “I am stunned to hear that Delhi Police have filed a case of murder against unknown persons in the demise of my late wife Sunanda. Needless to say, I am anxious to see this case is investigated thoroughly and continue to assure the police of my full co-operation.” He sought copies of the autopsy and forensic reports, stating he had not been given these, despite requesting earlier as well. Congress General Secretary Janardan Dwivedi told reporters, “Shashi Tharoor has said he will cooperate with the investigation. It is a very good stand. There must be an impartial inquiry, just investigation and appropriate action. There should be no discrimination (either) in someone’s favour or against.”
