With the “Mission-Toilet” grabbing its importance ahead of prime minister’s second Independence Day address, corporate and industries are pitching in with their last resort to meet the target.

Country’s largest power producer, National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), a maharatna company in the public sector undertakings (PSUs) segment, which had rolled out a plan for 24,000-plus toilets across the country, is all set to create a benchmark of sort by handing over required number of toilets at various locations. The 2,600-Mw Korba super thermal power station of NTPC in Chhattisgarh is spearheading the cause with construction of 450 toilets in 267 schools in the tribal district.

“The NTPC, Korba, has already handed over 200 toilets to the schools while the rest are to be handed over in a week or so,” company spokesperson Ashutosh Nayak said. Well before August 15, 2015, all 450 toilets would be at the disposal of the beneficiaries, he said, adding that 27 teams comprising 81 employees of NTPC Korba station have been working round-the-clock since the beginning of the project to ensure that the toilets are built adhering to the quality standards and within stipulated time.

Prakash Tiwari, group general manager of NTPC Korba, has been chosen among the nine ‘ratnas (jewels)’ as part of Swachh Bharat Mission in the district. He has been constantly visiting the sites to check the quality of the construction. Over a dozen toilets were dismantled after the quality of the construction was found below standard.

According to an estimate, amount of up to Rs 1.37 lakh has been earmarked for a toilet including two-year maintenance cost by the station management.

Nayak said completion of the project within time-frame was a challenge as most of the schools were located far away from the station. Getting employees reach out to those schools and monitor progress of the work at regular intervals in addition to their core responsibilities explained the volume of involvement and execution mechanism.
