The Tamil Nadu government should come out with a draft state-focused intellectual property (IP) policy, strategy and a workplan in line with the related national policy, according to a study by Tamil Nadu Technology Development and Promotion Centre, released in collaboration with the industry body Confederation of India Industry (CII) .

"Inspite of a deep focus on innovation in Tamil Nadu and the number of industrial hubs in the state, it must be mentioned that we're still in the nascent stages of setting up an ecosystem with more focus on IP creation, its monetisation and protection," stated the report.

Even in the MSME segment, a large number of industrial organisations are yet to take advantage of their potential to create IP. Additionally, almost 90 percent of the patents filed in the state are from Chennai, and there was a need to increase awareness in the rest of the state, the report noted.
