Madras High Court-appointed legal commissioner, U Sagayam, today submitted after nine long months report on multi-crore granite scam in Madurai district. The 600-page report was submitted to the first bench headed by Chief Justice.

Report covers over 30 aspects of scam including impact on rural life and criminal manifestations, mostly on agrarian populace.

Sagayam as Madurai collector had brought illegal mining of granite to the limelight. His 2012-report on the issue claimed Rs 16,000 crore loss to the state exchequer and had set the stage for a laborious investigation by his successor Anshul Mishra.

Sagayam started his investigation after receiving over 600 petitions from locals about impact of illegal mining on agriculture, cattle rearing, environmental degradation, vandalising structures, destruction of water bodies, supply channels, irrigation tanks, encroachment of poromboke land, panchami land, cremation yard and temple land and others.

It is also alleged that human sacrifice were made as nine bodies were exhumed from two such sites and their forensic analysis is under way.
