TN police arrest 6 people for betting in IPL

Cops have recovered Rs 14 lakh cash along with latest gadgets from bookies led by Harish Bajaj

A day after three players were arrested on spot-fixing in the sixth edition of Indian Premier League (IPL), Tamil Nadu Police have arrested six people in Chennai in connection with match betting.

The six member group was led by Harish Bajaj and all of them are from Chennai. The Police also recovered Rs 14 lakh cash along with latest gadgets from the bookies, who even had an association.

CB-CID officials have said that the bookies were taken into custody and being questioned for cheating the public and giving false hope. “We have secured him (Harish Bajaj) along with five others and they were booked under Sections 120 B, 420 and the Tamil Nadu Gaming act,” said CBCID Spokesperson.

The other people who were secured by CB-CID includes Lucky alias Lakshman, Pappu, Deepak Bajaj, Sunil Bajaj, and Vedachalam

The Police acted based on the complaints and information they got from the public, after they were not paid back their deposits and whatever the handsome profits they were promised by their bookies. These betting was during a particular match Kings XI Punjab (vs) Pune Warriors at Punjab.

“Though we got names and information of 13 people, only six of them were secured and we will arrest the rest soon,” said the spokesperson. These bookies even got an association and got one head also. The arrest started on Thursday night.

During the interrogation he (Bajaj) told us it was the IPL where the concentration was more.

The spokesperson said, these people were operating from a well set up and hit-tech office at Saidapet, which is in the heart of the city, and the bidding amount and bonus were decided by somebody from Delhi.

The bookies were financiers and retail shop owners, retired people and business men and they are aged between 30 and 70 years old. The supervisor or the master mind was keep giving instruction on the bid money and bonus during the matches from New Delhi.

The Police secured Rs 14 lakh in cash, 5 laptops, two desktops, 12 mobile phones, six landlines and five wireless phones.

“The focus was only on IPL and the bet amount ranges from Rs 1,000 to Rs 6 lakh. In one instance the bet amount was Rs 5-6 lakh for a single ball”. The official said the bet was not players it was only on the match.

He narrated, that each bookies had 10-15 customers and they were identified in bars and restaurants in the city. The communication has been through phone and each group had a courier boy to pick up and deliver money. If the customers does not have enough money to bet, the bookies themselves acted as financiers for them.

The bonus for the bidders were decided by a supervisor in Delhi. While the bonus for bets on a team which usually wins the match was 40%, the bonus for a team which looses would be double of that – 80%.

Harish Bajaj was cheating public, especially innocent public, by saying he knows which team is going to win and also gave false-hope of big profit. Once he was arrested, based on his cell phone details, six more were arrested.
