UPSC Civil Services Main Exam 2016 exam schedule announced

The preliminary examination results were announced on September 16, 2016 at www.upsc.gov.in.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) (Link: www.upsc.gov.in) published a new timetable for the Civil Services / IAS Main Examination 2016. The exam schedule has been released on the official website www.upsc.gov.in.
 
Commission will conduct the mains from December 3, 2016 to December 9, 2016. The exam will be held in two sessions. The morning session will be held from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM, while the afternoon session examinations from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
 
UPSC announced the preliminary examination result on September 16, 2016 on the official website – upsc.gov.in. Around 15, 445 candidates have qualified for the UPSC Civil Services 2016 mains examination. The exams were conducted on August 7, 2016 in two phases. The first phase started from 9.30 AM till 11.30 AM, while the second phase from 2.30PM to 4.30 PM.
 
How to check the UPSC prelims result 2016:

1.      Log on to the official website upsc.gov.in

2.      Go to the Whats New section on the right hand side of the page

3.      Click on the Result of CS(P) 2016 link

4.      List with roll numbers of successful candidates will be displayed

5.      Check and take a print out
 
The declared result list comprises roll numbers of only those candidates who have secured a sectional as well as overall aggregate qualifying mark as per their caste categories.
 
UPSC Civil Services examination

Touted as the most coveted of the UPSC examinations, Civil Services exam is held every year to recruit candidates for the post of Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer. The exam is conducted in two stages - prelims and mains, for approximately 1079 posts of administrative positions, including Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and Central Services (Group A and Group B).
 
Successful candidates, who have qualified the preliminary exam, have to register for mains and fill a detailed application form (DAF) so as to apply for further rounds of the recruitment drive. The forms will be available on the website from October 7 to October 20, 2016 till 6:00 PM. The e-admit card will be uploaded on the website for the eligible candidates around two weeks before the commencement of the examination.
 
Mains schedule

Commission will conduct the main examination from December 3, 2016 to December 9, 2016. The exam will be held in two sessions. The morning session will be held from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM, while the afternoon session examinations will be held from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
 
The examinations for the essay paper will be held on Saturday December 3, 2016. On Monday December 5, 2016, the general studies paper I and paper II examinations will be conducted. While on Tuesday December 6, 2016, the commission has planned to hold general studies paper III and paper IV examination.
 
On Wednesday December 7, 2016, examinations for Indian languages will be conducted in the morning session. The paper A is for the following languages: Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Dogri, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Santhali, Sindhi (Devanagari/Arabic Script), Tamil, Telugu or Urdu. Paper B, English exams will be conducted in the afternoon session.
 
The examinations for the optional papers will be held on Friday December 9, 2016. No exam will be conducted on Sunday December 4, 2016 and Thursday December 8, 2016.

Optional papers

The optional paper I, paper VI, to be conducted on December 9, 2016 in the morning session and optional paper II, i.e. paper VII, in the afternoon session, will be for Agriculture, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Anthropology, Botany, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Commerce & Accountancy, Economics, Electrical Engineering, Geography, Geology, History, Law, Management, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Medical Science, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science & International Relations, Psychology, Public Administration, Sociology, Statistics, Zoology and Literature.
 
For literature part of the exam, candidate can appear for any one of the following languages: Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Dogri, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, San thali, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu and English.
 
UPSC main examination

The question papers (other than the literature of language papers) are set in bilingual i.e. Hindi and English only. Candidates have the option to write their answers either in English or in any one of the eighth schedule languages except the qualifying language papers – paper A and paper B. They have to attempt the paper in a language indicated at the time of filling up of their online application form for the preliminary examination.
 
The minimum qualifying standards in each of the two qualifying papers i.e. English and Indian Languages is 25%. The paper on Indian language (paper A) will not be compulsory for candidates hailing from the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim. Marks obtained by the candidates for the papers I-VII only will be counted for merit ranking (of those candidates who obtain the specified minimum marks in the qualifying papers). However, the commission will have the discretion to fix qualifying marks in any or all of these papers.
 
The UPSC will release the marks, cut-offs and answer keys only after the final result has been declared on the official website.
 
Personality test

After conducting the mains, candidates will again be shortlisted on the basis of their aggregate qualifying marks, and will be called for the last and final stage of the selection, interview rounds. The final selection for administrative positions will be made on the basis of the overall marks obtained in the main examination and the interview.
 
The candidates, opting for Indian language medium for the written part of the main examination may choose either the same Indian language or English or Hindi as the medium for the interview. The candidates, opting to write the Civil Services (main) examination in English, may choose either English or Hindi or any other Indian language opted by them for the compulsory Indian language paper in the written part of the Civil Services (Main) examination, as the medium for interview. The candidate has to indicate the language medium of their interview at the time of filling up of the Detailed Application Form (DAF).
 
However, the candidates, who are exempted from the compulsory Indian language paper, will have to choose either English or Hindi as medium of interview of personality test.
