The West Bengal assembly was adjourned sine die after a stormy winter session, amidst a Congress walkout and the Speaker defending the suspension of three CPI(M) MLAs following violence in the House as Left Front members stayed away for the third day today over the issue.

Speaker Biman Banerjee referred to the violence on December 11 in the House when ruling TMC and Left members traded blows, and said he was constrained to suspend three CPI(M) members for their conduct on Tuesday. Banerjee said that had he not suspended them, a wrong message would have gone that anyone could do whatever they liked in the House.

Stating that the opposition members were being stubborn, he said that he could not fathom why they sought to evade the House.

Stating that some undesirable incidents took place which should not have happened, he said that there should be heat in the House and constructive criticism during question hour, which would be a testing time for ministers. Banerjee hoped that next session of the House would be smooth. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who arrived at the fag end of the five day session, praised the manner in which the Speaker conducted the House.
