Why HRD Minister skipped Gokhale Institute's convocation ceremony?

The institute is being accused of providing 'fake' degrees to students by introducing courses without the approval of UGC

Human Reoursce and Development (HRD) minister today skipped the convocation ceremony of Gokhale Institute of Economics and Politics (GIPE).  Irani was the chief guest for Institute’s 22ed Annual convocation ceremony.

However, the reason being said that the institute is in the midst of a controversy as it has been accused of providing ‘fake’ degrees to  students by introducing courses without the approval of the University Grants Commission. Sunil Gokhale, a city-based lawyer and great grandson of nationalist leader Gopal Krishna Gokhale has made serious allegations against institute just three days before the GIPE’s convocation event.

GIPE was established in 1930 by the Servants of India Society, founded by nationalist leader Gopal Krishna Gokhale and is a well known institute in India.

He alleged that courses like masters in financial economics and agro business economics are not as per the norms prescribed by UGC. Hence, the students are getting fake degrees for such courses. Sunil has also written to GIPE, UGC, and state education department on the issue.

“I have written to Human Resources Development (HRD) Minister Smriti Irani, requesting her not to attend the convocation following malpractices in the institute,” Sunil told media persons on Thursday.

Sunil claimed that institute is issuing fake degrees to its students by not adhering to the norms issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Dr Rajiv Kumar, Chancellor of Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics said, “GIPE is a reputed institute globally. This is a conspiracy against institute. Some people must have provided wrong information to the minister and they are misleading her.”

“GIPE is an 85-year-old reputed institute in India. All of our courses are as per the norms prescribed by UGC. These allegations are absolutely baseless and It is not going to affect our reputation. The NAAC committee and the UGC, have greatly admired the courses started by GIPE as they are in accordance with the new age," said Rajas Parchure, director, GIPE.

According to Parchure, the local BJP MP Anil Shirole has conveyed the message to institute that the HRD minister is not able to attend the convocation ceremony.

Sunil claimed that he has a sentimental attachment towards the institute as his great grandfather was associated with the institute.
