Reforming the mid-day meal programme, Chhattisgarh government has decided to entrust the women self help groups (WSHGs) with the responsibility of managing and cooking the meal.
In the state, about 70,000 WSHGs are working. The group would be given the responsibility to take over the mid-day meal programme in their respective area where they had been working. The new system of cooking mid-day meal would come into effect from January 1, 2014.
“The school education department had issued the order to implement the new form of programme in the state,” senior officials with the department said. The District Collectors and District Education Officers had been asked to complete all the arrangements by the end of this month.
The officials said the District Collector would be the Chairman of the District-level Monitoring and Supervising Committee constituted to monitor the execution of this scheme in their respective district.
Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh had announced after assuming office for the third term that WSHGs would be bestow the task of running the kitchen for serving mid-day meal to the primary and middle school students studying in government schools.
