Ankit Keshri, a 20-year-old cricket player from Bengal, succumbed to his on-field injuries on Monday. He had sustained the injury after an on-field collision with his teammate, bowler Sourabh Mondal, during a match between his team, the East Bengal Club, and the Bhowanipore Club on April 17. Ankit, a right-handed batsman, had captained the Bengal U-19 cricket team.

This comes just months after Phil Hughes, a young Australian cricketer died due to injuries sustained after being hit by a ball while batting.

Ankit was being treated at the AMRI Hospital in Kolkata. Some media reports say he died after a cardiac arrest. However, an MRI and CT Scan at the hospital had showed no signs of haemorrhage, the reports said. Ankit wasn't originally a part of the playing elevn and came on as a substitute during the course of the match.

“We had recommended two more tests — MRI angiography and carotin doppler — to check his brain condition. He had fever and was drowsy. We wanted to keep him under observation as the diagnosis was incomplete. But his family members insisted on shifting him out, so we didn't get a chance to conduct the tests,” Times of India quoted Rupak Barua, CEO of AMRI Hospital, as saying. Keshri's family had signed a “discharge on risk” bond to move him out of AMRI, the report said. Hours after Ankit succumbed to his injury, his father Raj Kumar Keshri alleged medical negligence.

Meanwhile, according to a PTI  report, Kolkata Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir has offered support to the family. “You can't replace what the family has lost. But I can assure you one thing that we (KKR) would go out there and do whatever we can for the family.... We would always be there and hopefully we could contribute as much as we could. We will do anything possible for them,” said Gambhir after the defending champions' six-wicket win over Delhi Daredevils on Monday night.
