India today said it could carry further evacuation of its nationals from violence-marred Cairo if the situation warranted and termed as "unfortunate" the threat and intimidation the media was facing there.
Asking the Indian media to be in close touch with the Embassy there, Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao said "our Ambassador and Embassy in Cairo have been working overtime to attend the needs of our media and responding to any request for help and support."
Noting that there were about 3,600 Indian nationals living across Egypt, including Cairo and Alexandria, she said "security of our nationals, media, students and citizens living there and working there, is paramount."
She said the Indian mission was in touch with the Indian community, including 1,037 students at Al-Azhar university and they were fine.
"We have evacuated 500 people recently.... If the situation warrants more evacuation will be arranged. But as of now, no evacuation is being contemplated. But it will all depend on how the situation develops," the Foreign Secretary said.
