CPI(M)-affiliated trade union CITU, which staged a two-day strike in SAIL from October 30, today threatened to launch an indefinite strike if the authorities failed to reach an agreement on the settlement of wages for the workers.

"The two-day strike by the employees of SAIL on October 30 and 31 was a total success and the adamant management should settle their wages pending for the last 34 months," Bishnu Mohanty, general secretary of the Orissa state unit of the CITU, told newspersons here.

He added the National Joint Committee on Steel, which deals with the wage agreement, should settle the wage issue of 140,000 million SAIL employees and 75,000 contractual labourers in its meeting on November 12.

The management, meanwhile, added the loss in Rourkela Steel Plant due to the two-day strike  amounts to about Rs 10 crore.
