The Union Commerce Ministry has said Special Economic Zones (SEZs), which have been rejected by the people of Goa will not be forced in the state, Chief Minister Digamber Kamat said.

Kamat, who also holds the Industries portfolio, told this to reporters here after his return from New Delhi where he had gone to attend the National Conference of Industries Ministers last week.

"During the conference, I conveyed to Union Commerce Minister Anand Sharma that denotification of three SEZs is still pending. Goa has already scrapped SEZ projects in the state and related communication has been forwarded to the Centre," Kamat said.

"They can't force anything against people's wish... especially when Congress President Sonia Gandhi has assured that SEZs would not be allowed in the state (Goa), there is no question of having them," he said. The Chief Minister said that there is a huge process that has to be completed to denotify SEZs.
