11 Punjab SEZs cleared

Eleven special economic zones (SEZs) for Punjab have been approved by the Union Commerce Ministry, while another four are in the pipeline. These are expected to come up by the end of 2008. Of the 11, two will comeup in Ludhiana, four in Mohali, four in Amritsar and one in Rajpura.
 
This was revealed by Union Commerce Secretary GK Pillai, on his visit to the city on Friday. Ludhiana SEZ will be developed by DLF in a total area of 1,011 hectares and another by Ludhiana-based Rockman Industries.
 
DLF is coming up with a total of five SEZs in the state, four in Amritsar and one in Ludhiana for which the company has formal approval from the Centre.
 
Other companies that have got formal approvals to set up SEZ's in Punjab include Ludhiana-based Rockman Projects, Shipra Estates, Vividha and Mridula Infrastructure.
 
He said all the 11 SEZs will be generating employment for more than one lakh persons, while all across the country over 100 SEZs have been notified with a total investment of Rs 28,000 crore. By the end of this financial year, the total investment will cross one lakh crore.
 
The government of India is planning to notify 40 more SEZs across the country by the end of this month. In total, India will have 139 notified SEZs by the month end and almost 234 by the year end.
