200 new transmitters for AIR approved: Minister

The government today said in order to further increase the AIR coverage all over the country, 200 new transmitters have been approved under the 11th five year plan.

"The government has approved 200 new transmitters in the spillover scheme under the 11th five year plan to further increase the AIR coverage in the country," Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting S Jagathrakshakan said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

He said the Doordarshan has 1,416 transmitters, while All India Radio has 374.  The minister said at the time of formation of Prasar Bharti, there were 924 transmitters of Doordarshan and 299 of the AIR.
