Here is good news for small fishpond owners in Uttarakhand.

The state government has decided that fishponds, having a size of more than 50 sq metres, would also get the 30 per cent subsidy benefit.

Earlier, such subsidy was only available to fishponds of more than 100 sq metres.

“In the hills of Uttarakhand, people generally keep small ponds. So we decided that the benefits of the subsidy should also reach small pond owners,” said Animal Husbandry Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat.

The move is likely to give boost to the business of fisheries as fish in the Himalayan belt are considered tasty.

In addition to this, Rawat said he has also instructed the department to provide five ducks, free of cost, to each small pond owners and 10 ducks to big pond owners, keeping in view the growing demand of duck eggs in the market.

“Our survey suggest not only duck eggs are being liked but also the meat of duck is considered to be of high quality,” said Rawat. A duck egg generally costs Rs 6 to 8 in the market.

Significantly, the production of fish in Uttarakhand has reached 3,000 tonnes against 575 tonnes last year.
