36 MLAs suspended in Chhattisgarh

Thirty-six lawmakers, mostly from the opposition Congress, were suspended on Tuesday when they trooped into the well of the House in Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly (CLA) demanding resignation of Chief Minister Raman Singh citing deteriorating law and order situation in the state.

Of the 36 suspended members, 34 are from the Congress while two represent Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in the House of 90 members. The main opposition has 39 members in the House.

“The members had been suspended from the House for the day,” Speaker Dharamlal Kaushik said.

Under section 250 (1) of the rules of CLA's procedure and conduct of business, during the sitting of House, no member shall leave his seat to enter the well of the House. The membership of such member who enters in the well of the House will be deemed suo motu suspended for such period as the Speaker decides.

Uproar started soon after the House assembled today for the second day's business of the five-day winter session. The Opposition raised the issue of deteriorating law and order situation and cited the recent killings of two abducted children.

They did not allow the question hour to transact.

The Speaker adjourned the House for one hour. When it reassembled at 12 noon, the chaos continued as members stalled business and demanded resignation of the Chief Minister.

The Congress members started raising slogans and created pandemonium in the House. Amidst chaos, the House conducted other businesses.

When Home Minister Nankiram Kanwar started reading the statement related to kidnapping incident, Congress members stormed into the well of the House. The suspended MLAs included leader of the Opposition Ravindra Choubey and BSP member Saurabh Singh.
